WELCOME TO THE MUSLIM JOURNAL

By Ayesha K. Mustafaa, Editor, Muslim Journal

Muslim Journal is in its 36th Year of continuous weekly publication, however it stands on the legacy of the struggle to disseminate unadulterated news to the reading public. Beginning with the first African American newspaper, Freedom’s Journal, published by Editors John B. Russwurm and Samuel E. Cornish in 1827, and the decisive newspaper, The North Star,  published by Frederick Douglass, the great ex-slave and abolitionist who became Ambassador to Haiti, Muslim Journal picked up the mantle passed on by Malcolm X, as he represented the Hon. Elijah Muhammad in the creation of Muhammad Speaks, and carried on by the mentor to Malcolm and son of the Hon. Elijah Muhammad – Imam W. Deen Mohammed, to establish an independent voice not just for African Americans but also for Muslim Americans.

Now with the misinformation about Muslims, it is to serve all Americans with a clearer picture and understanding of Islam. Muslim Journal’s masthead reads: Bringing humanity together with truth and understanding. Its working mantra is to “Fill the Void” for our readers, and in doing so allow them to “See The Full Picture!” Muslim Journal recognizes itself as an American institution that takes full advantage of its resources protected by the U.S. Constitution – to be a free press uninhibited by government, corporate or individual biases.

The Muslim population in the U.S. is said to be between 6 million and 12 million Muslims, given the variance in that religion is not a Census question to American citizens. About 25% of this Muslim population has been attributed to Muslim African Americans. Its marketing audience has buying power that has caught the eye of media giants like the New York Times. Muslims in the U.S. are predominantly highly professional, educated and working in high paying positions as politicians, doctors, lawyers, engineers, franchise owners and local store owners. They are White Collar, Blue Collar, Skilled and Manual Laborers.

The average age of the population is 40 to 50 years of age, making up 60% of Muslim Americans. 25% are college and higher learning attendees with aspirations of entering the American workplace and performing intricate roles in American life. For example, the first Muslim to become a U.S. Congressman Keith Ellison has demonstrated the quiet preparation and climb to be a part of the highest decision making body of this country. The second Muslim to be elected to the U.S. Congress, Andre Carson, also is a member of this population and subscriber to Muslim Journal. The Muslim American target audience buying power averages $143 billion, 60% are males and 40% females.
